Matachica Resort & Spa is ideally located on the northern side of Ambergris Caye Island, a 15-minute local flight from Belize's mainland. Belize boasts the mysteries of the Ancient Maya, glorious white sand beaches and a spectacular 174 mile-long barrier reef. Matachica offers visitors a getaway filled with aquatic adventures, including first-class diving and snorkeling at locations including the Lighthouse Reef, Turneffe, the famous Blue Hole and Hol Chan Marine Reserve, a strictly enforced marine park situated at a deep cut in Belize’s barrier reef.
Guests can also indulge at the resort’s luxurious Jade Spa. The Jade Spa offers rejuvenating massages and treatments using natural ingredients sourced locally from the Belizean Jungle and Sea, such as banana and papaya facials, coffee scrubs and chocolate body wraps.

What was your design inspiration for Matachica Resort & Spa?

The rooms at Matachica are uniquely decorated with hints of Central American motifs and original art collected from around the world including several pieces from Belgian artist Peter Terrin. We wanted to ensure an intimate and local feel in the villas, which are vibrantly colored and topped with authentic thatched roofs. Each villa features mosaic bathrooms, Frette linens and duvets, hammocks from Guatemala and private patios with DEDON furniture and Tucci umbrellas. Each room is screen-free to encourage guests to completely unplug, unwind and re-connect to what matters most in life.
For an even more indulgent stay, guests can stay in the new Luxury Beachfront Villas, complete with a private Jacuzzi overlooking the beach.

What are the three most important elements when designing a bedroom/room?

As the ultimate place of refuge, rest and love, it is vital to build the perfect bed. Where we sleep is the most important part of a hotel experience. We often have guests ask at the end of our stay about our bedding, as they feel incredibly rested.
Local touches: it is important to feel connected to the local culture of where one is staying. We work closely with local Central American artists and artisans to ensure our clients feel engaged with the country they are visiting.
Comfort: From our hammocks created in Guatemala with views of the Caribbean Sea, to the beautiful Tucci terrace furniture, every detail is considered to ensure ultimate relaxation.

If you only have 72 hours in the city what would you recommend doing or seeing?

What is your favourite restaurant in the city?

Matachica’s award-winning Mambo restaurant is widely considered to be one of the best in the country. Adorned with exotic paintings, candelabras, handcrafted Belizean art and rich mahogany furniture, Mambo will excite your palate with locally inspired dishes such as curried island shrimp, sautéed and served with a puree of yucca, and sprinkled with a corn, rum and papaya chutney, and fresh grouper prepared with paprika, garlic, olive oil and lime zest and served with char-roasted local corn. Mambo offers a carefully selected list of international wines, while the wonderful bar team make it a point of pride to create the most enticing cocktails.
