Tell us about the design of The Royal Hawaiian.

The hotel draws inspiration from Spanish-Moorish style architecture with a bright pink hue façade. As the site of the former playground of King Kamehameha I and Queen Kaahumanu’s Summer Palace, the overall design also incorporates touches of Hawaiian royalty. The traditional Historic Guestrooms feature vintage koa seating, exotic furnishings, and historic photographs to exude the feel of both exotic and contemporary flavors. Mailani Tower guestrooms, on the other hand, offer a much more modern feel with contemporary, beach-inspired touches and an open-concept gathering place in the breezy lounge for guests to relax and enjoy the beachfront location.

What are three fun facts about the property that many are surprised to learn?

The salmon pink color of the hotel was inspired by the pink-colored houses in Lisbon, Portugal.
The hotel sits upon the grounds of Helumoa, where Hawaiian royalty once ruled. Known today at the Coconut Grove, this area served as the site of the summer home of Queen Kaahumanu.
In 1942, the Navy Recreation and Morale Office leased the hotel, transforming it into a major rest and relaxation center for Navy Personnel.

What touches do you believe make a room or suite feel like a home-away-from-home?

Overall comfort, which is created through thoughtful details. From amenities, services, furnishings, bedding, and view – all these elements make up the ultimate experience of relaxation and luxury at your home-away-from-home.

Luxury encompasses a number of important factors – the feeling you get when you walk into a place, incredible service, uniquely personalized amenities and the authentic experiences along the way that truly create something unforgettable.

If you only had 24 hours in Honolulu, where would you visit?

Waikiki is bustling with so many great attractions – from Diamond Head just a few miles away to the newly-rebuilt International Market Place just steps away, there is so much to explore.
You will also want to take a day trip to the North Shore for a more laid-back experience with great beaches, boutiques, and unique Hawaiian food.

In your opinion, why is February a great time of year to visit Honolulu?

While it is still cold in many parts of the U.S., Honolulu’s weather is a comfortable 78-82 degrees Fahrenheit so hopping into the beach is a must. February also tends to be less crowded in all areas so you will be able to travel around comfortably. Also, winter season typically has the largest waves on Oahu’s North Shore, so you never know when you might be able to catch a surfing competition.

Why do you travel?

Traveling is all about experiencing different cultures, discovering unique moments and creating memories. When travelers visit Oahu, I hope they take the time to learn about the rich history of the island, engage with locals and connect with the culture.

How do you define luxury?

Luxury encompasses a number of important factors – the feeling you get when you walk into a place, incredible service, uniquely personalized amenities and the authentic experiences along the way that truly create something unforgettable. It is the feeling of being able to disconnect and truly appreciate where you are.
